Bouncy castle safety testing

All bouncy castles and inflatables used within the hire market must have an initial test and annual safety test by law. This is the case for inflatables hired for use in back gardens and also inflatables used in public places and at events.

Although the law and the hse cannot define exactly who can and cannot carryout bouncy castle safety tests the hse currently recognise only RPII qualified,ADIPS and PIPA inspectors as being competent to carry out safety inspections, and support only PIPA and ADIPS recording systems. The inflatable safety test itself is made up of 30+ items which are cross referenced with the European build standard Bs en 14960. The items cover everything from the security of the stitching and air pressure to the fall off heights and suitability of the anchorage system. Many of the items will have a physical measurement check for compliance and some are a visual inspection for wear and tear and suitability.

As with any trade there are specific tools required to carry out bouncy castle and inflatables testing correctly. In this case the inspector will need: a tape measure, a suitable pressure gauge, a set of probes, an anchor pull tester, a scale, set of weights, a pat testing machine, and a copy of BS en14960. If your chosen inspector turns up without the tools listed it’s unlikely they will be able to carry out the inspection correctly and should be turned away and reported to their respective scheme provider (PIPA or ADIPS)

Jump ‘in Jacks has been a registered inspection body since 2005 and can be found listed on the register of play inspector’s international and PIPA websites. We can carry out safety inspections on inflatables and issue PIPA or in house safety certification for items that fall outside the scope of PIPA. We prefer when possible to carry out bouncy castle safety testing at our base in Rowley Regis near Birmingham and Dudley because we have our own repairs facilities there so minor defects can be rectified straight away if need be. Alternatively we can come out and test onsite. There is a min order value of two tests and a mileage fee if testing onsite, and we expect the client to have the inflatables set up ready to be tested on our arrival. Test prices start from £60.00 for standard bouncy castles upto 20x20ft, more complexed and larger items are priced accordingly and inspection report logging is charged separately in all cases.

Day rates are available for upto around 17 items

All fees are payable regardless of equipment passing or failing the inspection.

Common failures other than ware and tare issues are : broken stitching and inadequate or warn anchorage. Where possible we ask clients to forward us pictures of the equipment to be tested so we can highlight any obvious issues before booking in tests.

Frequantly asked questions

  • Do we have to bring our castle to you for testing?

Where possible we'd like you to bring the castle to our premises for testing as minor failures can often be repaired on the spot. Sometimes this isnt really an option due to the size or amount of equipment that needs inspecting so we will come out onsite but there will be an additional cost for this.

  • What happens if our inflatable fails the inspection?

Once the inspection is carried out you will be issued a fail report, we're happy to provide a quote to carryout repairs but, you are not obliged to use us to carryout the work if you wish to have it done else where. Once we are satisfied that the repairs needed have been done we will issue a pass report.

  • What if we dont agree with the result of bthe inspection?

If we fail your inflatable we must be able to demonstrate why, this may be by physical measurement or by visual defect. If you dispute the result and the test falls within the scope of bsen14960 you can complain to PIPA directly who will investigate the matter and make a desicision as to if the inspector has acted correctly. In any case all fees are still payable.
